Lessons Learned from Blind Playtesting with Mike Mihealsick

Mike Mihealsick, from Coalition Games, discusses all the lessons and insights he’s learned after facilitating hundreds of blind playtests. Blind playtesting is the purifying fire in which we truly get to find out what our games are made of, and Mike offers a ton of advice on how to navigate the process well.

    Gabe,

I’m fascinated by the fact that this industry has truly revolutionized other industries (fulfillment centers for shipping) or created completely new ones (blind-playtesting services). Mike had many insightful comments, and as a designer, I’m well aware of the tendency toward perfection, but also quite aware of perfect being the enemy of the good. I’m fortunate to have three separate blind-playtest groups..and they’re blind play-test groups because they’re geographically separated from me (D.C., PA, and FL). As your voice-over makes clear in the outro, “Did I mention, keep play-testing?” ~ from me, it’s a resounding “Yes!”

    Cheers,
    Joe
