Chris Kirkman, designer of Fate of the Elder Gods, discusses Cthulhu themed games and what makes them so popular. There’s just something about Cthulhu that continues to intrigue people, and even with all the Cthulhu games that have come out, there’s still a great deal left to be explored.

    Gabe,

This was a great bookend to the interview with Richard Launius which I listened to a few months ago. I have to laugh, however, because the more I listened to the two of you talk ()and yes, I could tell you two apart)< the more Chris sounds a bit like Richard. Go back and listen to it again. Anyway, Cthulhu will remain on the Top 10 List of genres for quite some time, so I absolutely agree with Chris in this regard. I'm not sure how an Arkham Legacy game would work, if we're staying true to the Lovecraftian tales, which were all short stories. There's definitely an air of finality with all of the texts he and his other Mythos-makers penned.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and I have to admit, while I don't see a future in which I';m designing games with Richard, I agree with Chris that playing a game with him is a ton of fun. Several years ago, at Arkham Nights in Roseville, MN, my girlfriend and I had a chance to play Elder Sign with him…what a blast!

    Cheers,
    Joe
