A Day in the Life of a Pro Designer with Jamey Stegmaier

Jamey Stegmaier, designer of Scythe, is back on the show, and we’re talking about what the schedule of a pro game designer looks like. It’s easy to have a romanticized idea of what being a full time designer is, but it doesn’t quite line up with reality.

We talk about the daily fires that have to be put out, how to be intentional with your time, ways to become more efficient, and much more.

    Gabe,

Good for you to secure another 45 min with Jamey…he’s not only a wealth of information, but he possesses a humility seldom found in most industries. I’ve heard him speak on a number of occasions, and it’s interesting that he discussed the number of tasks he handles on a daily or weekly basis, and that he’s also cognizant of the fact that he needs to delegate more over time. One of the things he mentioned earlier in the broadcast dealt with play testing. As a developer, that’s one of my primary responsibilities: access play test groups; coordinate myriad play tests; provide for/format feedback, and provide reports to the designer, who can then do what they do best…design games.

Anyway, it’s always great to spend the morning with you and your guests on the way to work. Hope to catch-up with you at Origins this year…and by extension, I also invite you to NOVACON, Northern VA’s first convention this July.

    Cheers,
    Joe

Jamey is, without question, one of my favorite people to talk games and design with. He’s incredibly generous with his time, and I’ve heard from others on how much he’s helped them with various things.

The world needs more people like you and him, Joe!
